Hallow's community defibrillator ready to save lives
Back in May 2017, Clearview’s first aider, Sarah Ingleston, returned from her first-aid training with the idea that a community defibrillator would be a great addition to the Elgar Business Centre in Hallow. Due to the rural location of the business park, it would be unlikely that anyone suffering a heart attack would survive without this equipment – the chances of living decrease by 10% for every minute that passes.
The challenge to raise enough funds to support Sarah was taken up by a number of colleagues who all volunteered to help, not least Ellie Durn and Katie Hawkins, who decided that they would attempt a sponsored skydive. Both Ellie and Katie’s fathers have heart conditions so this was a cause that has a personal meaning for them. Other colleagues helped in a number of ways – baking cakes for a cake sale, donating prizes for a raffle and delivering leaflets to the surrounding neighbours.
We received a great response to our appeal, and managed to hit our target in September 2017 after a number of donations from supporters, neighbours, and businesses on the Elgar Business Centre. Children from Hallow CE Primary School independently organised a cake sale to help towards our fundraising. We are grateful to everyone who helped – details of all of our supporters can be found on our Just Giving page.
The defibrillator has now been installed and can be found outside Clearview’s office. We raised enough money to fund a defibrillator training and awareness session provided by the WMAS NHS Foundation Trust. Employees from Clearview Systems Ltd, Opus Claims Solutions Ltd, Microtrol Ltd, Child Care Bureau Ltd, Parsons Trading Ltd, Timecode Systems and Worcestershire Federation of Women’s Institutes all attended the training session, when children from Hallow CE Primary School also came along to see the results of their fundraising.
Not only will the defibrillator potentially save a life, but we have all enjoyed participating in an initiative that has definitely helped bring a sense of community to the business park.
